What is Yin Yoga? Yin Yoga is a meditative practice that targets the deep layers of fascia, ligaments, tendons, and joints in the body. Unlike its more dynamic counterparts, Yin Yoga involves holding poses for an extended period, typically ranging from three to ten minutes. Yin Yoga naturally triggers our fascia, the deep connective tissue that runs through our whole body. Holding the poses for an extended period encourages our connective tissue to soften and lengthen. Therefore it not only has a physical benefit, as it revitalizes the body and creates flexibility, but is emotionally healing too.
We all have “Issues in our tissues!” - Our incredible bodies hold and store emotions and trauma in our connective tissue. Through Yin Yoga we can release stored emotions and trauma from our mind and body. It is quite common for old/forgotten emotions to rise to the surface to be released and healed.
Yin Yoga allows us to safely open our hearts, and stay connected to our true self no matter how uncomfortable this may be.
Yin allows you to find your edge, where you feel resistance in your body. Remember to not go as deep as possible straight away. Take a moment to notice and feel sensations within your body and if your body starts to open this is an invitation to go deeper. Deepening your next edge. It’s important to note that your edge can differ from day today. Our bodies are ever-changing and this must be respected.
The aim in Yin is 60-70% not going straight to 100% in a pose. Holding stillness here cultivates your yin attitude. Benefits of Yin Yoga:

As opposed to more yang-focused practices like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, Yin Yoga was developed to balance the yang activities of our daily lives with a more passive and introspective approach. In the late 1970s, martial arts expert and yoga teacher Paulie Zink introduced Yin Yoga to the Western world. However, it was later popularized by Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers, who incorporated elements of traditional Chinese medicine and meridian theory into the practice.
